High Bridge:
An active railroad bridge near Wilmore, Kentucky. The original design for the bridge was a suspension bridge design completed by John Roebling in the mid 1800’s. Towers were built for the bridge, but construction was stopped due to a lack of finances in the 1850’s, and when the country was thrust into the Civil War.

New financial backers hired Charles Shaler Smith. He changed the design of the bridge to a cantilever style. The bridge was finished in February of 1877 at a cost of $404,856. The first train crossed the bridge three months later. The bridge was 1125 feet long, and 275 feet tall. At the time it was the highest and longest cantilever bridge in the world! It continued to be the highest crossing in North America until 1888.
