Reading & Northern 2102: Pittston Iron Horse Rambles: August 2024 (4K)

On August 17th, I made my way back down to the Reading & Northern this year to catch the final Iron Horse Ramble of 2024. After many rumors and speculation, 2024 was the first year they would run America's Northern 2102 on the Lehigh Line north of Jim Thorpe. Ever since the Pittston Train Station opened, it was a question of when would steam run back up to Pittston. Last time 425 did, was in 2014. With the opening of the new Nesquehoning Station, another place to board had just opened up. While I missed the Inaugural trip up to Tunkhannock in June, I made sure to make the Pittston Trip. Departing Nesquehoning, running through the Lehigh Gorge State Park into Pittston & return. It was a overcast day that was supposed to be Raining, 2102 put on a fantastic show battling the Grades up in both directions that day, through the beautiful Pennsylvania Mountain Region. For these trips as well the two Fast Freight Diesels were added on to help go down the grade, from Mountain Top to Pittston due to the 2% down hill grade. But this trip at various points, 2102 showed why it is the loudest operational steam locomotive, and why it is one of the best operational Steam shows in the world. I was lucky enough to capture these moments that day. Hope you all enjoy my coverage of the 2102 on various mountain grades, on an overcast day. I will be chasing more of these trips next year!

While chasing 2102, I ran into ‪@MPT_Productions‬ ‪@dakdillonphotography‬ ‪@TrainChamber‬ ‪@SmokyMtnSteam‬ ‪@fuscoproductions‬ ‪@BrodieProductions412‬ ‪@TheBigBananaRailfan‬ ‪@firegrateproductions‬ ‪@PennsyPro‬ ‪@aceoftrainsproductions745‬ ‪@ConnecticutRailFilms‬ & ‪@MrNJT‬

The #2102 was originally built as a Reading I-10sa Consolidation Type Steam Locomotive in the 1920s. In the 40s when the Reading Railroad needed a more powerful steam locomotive during the War, the locomotive was rebuild by the Reading Shops into the 4-8-4 T1 4-8-4 Type Steam Locomotive to haul the heavier trains. In the 1960s the engine operated on the Famous Reading Ramble Excursions. Afterwards, she would be sold and operated across the county. In the 1980s Andy Mueller purchased the 2102 and began operating it on his Tourist Railroad, and while she went down in 1991, she grandly returned in 2022! For the two two rambles seasons, it would operate exclusively from on the Reading to Thrope line. In 2024, it would finally run on the Lehigh line. Hopefully these trips continue into next year.

Next week it will be the video of the Former NS F Units on a Northbound Pittston Trip, as I cut that chase a little early due to the forecast. This weekend was supposed to be the Return of the Arcade & Attica 18 but they suffered a Major Setback. So until my adventure to the Strasburg Railroad in September for a Day out with Thomas, I have a few compilations I have been meaning to release.
