Mount Elvire Homestead

We last visited Mount Elvire Homestead and surrounds ten years ago in 2014. This time we came from Menzies direction rather than the Helena Aurora Ranges (Bungalbin) direction as we had done for the other two times that we had visited Mount Elvire. We choose to take the 4WD track which runs between Lake Giles and Lake Barlee from the Menzies/Evanston Road which meets up with Lake Barlee Road before heading to Mt Elvire Hmstd. This track had deteriorated a little and even deviated at one point from our last recorded Hema track log. You can camp at Mount Elvire Homestead however a more popular option and maybe a nicer spot is to set up against the back drop of the colorful breakaway which is a short 200 mtr drive West from the Homestead.

Mount Elvire Station is 155,000 hectares large with it's northern boundary including a peninsular of Lake Barlee. Prior to Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) purchasing the lease in 1981, it's reported Mt Elvire Station had two former owners; Mr Malcolm Ross ( 1966 to 1973) and then the McLaughlin family from 1973 to 1977. The McLaughlin's stocked the lease with 3,500 sheep.

In 1991 CALM purchased Mt Elvire Station and commenced de-stocking the property of sheep and goats and control them through mustering. The reason for purchasing the Mt Elvire Station was to conserve sandalwood. The purchase price was a mere $85,000.

Fun Fact:- While investigating a drug ring in 1989, police uncovered a plot to plant a cannabis crop on the Mount Elvira Station. At the time the pastoral lease was owned by the then Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM).

Mount Elvire Homestead is on the traditional lands of the Kaalamaya Kaprurn People, in Shire of Menzies.
