Lucignano is a small village and is one of the most interesting examples of medieval town planning because of its elliptical layout in concentric rings. Its happy geographical location , on top of a hill on the border between the ancient possessions of Florence, Arezzo, Siena and Perugia, has made it strategically important since ancient times.
Like all frontier lands it has undergone diverse cultural influences, but the link with Siena remains the one that more than any other has characterized the town's urban and artistic development. The artists who created the works of Art preserved today in the Municipal Museum are mainly Sienese, including the imposing Albero d'Oro, a jewel of medieval goldsmithing and compendium of Franciscan symbolism
