in this video:
After purchasing 18 acres of raw land, we needed to put in a culvert to access it from the road. We looked into renting equipment, but in the spirit of being debt free, we decided to do as much of it as we could by ourselves. We purchased a pipe, transported it to the property, and dug the trench. When it came to fill dirt, we tossed around the idea of wheelbarrowing loads of dirt from the back of the property. But when we did the math, that meant we'd be wheelbarrowing 50 loads of dirt, 20 miles of walking, at a calculated rate of 50 hours of work minimum. So, we opted to get fill dirt delivered, and spent a day shoveling, raking, and tamping. Building this culvert took about 3 weeks total from the planning and permitting to the tamping and leveling, but it was well worth it! The next project will be to clear and level about 300 feet of trees to connect the culvert to the back of the property.
