The Peak Tram (Hong Kong Peak Tramway, 山頂纜車) is a tramway (cable railway) operator in Hong Kong. Construction of this tramway system began in September 1885 and opened on May.30.1888.
It's the first public transport in Hong Kong and connected between Central Terminus (中環總站) and The Peak Terminus (山頂總站).
This system, which began operation since 1888, the oldest cable railway in Asia!! And it has been in operation for more than 135 years!!
The track gauge used by Peak Tram is 1,520 mm (4 ft 11 + 27⁄32 in) wide gauge, this is a reference to the track gauge of Soviet Railways (蘇聯寬軌). Because the government of the Russian Empire chose it in 1843, former areas and states of the Empire have inherited this standard, so this gauge also has another famous name called "Russian gauge" (沙俄軌距)!!
It's currently operated by Peak Tramways Co. Ltd. (山頂纜車有限公司), a subsidiary of Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Limited (HSH, 香港上海大酒店有限公司).
The Peak Tram is now operating the 6th generation cable car. This cable car has a longer body than before, can carry 75% more passengers than the previous generation train, and runs faster.
The Peak Tram has a total of 7 stations along the route, and they're located at different altitudes:
The Central Terminus (中環總站) is the starting station of Peak Tram, with an altitude of 33 meters. This station is very close to the MTR Admiralty Station, and passengers can reach it on foot in just 5 minutes. This station was formerly known as Garden Road Station (花園道站) and was built directly below St. John's Building (聖約翰大廈). The station has been moved to the south side of St. John's Building and renamed Central Terminus on Aug.27.2022.
The Kennedy Road Station (堅尼地道站) is the second station after departing from the starting station, with an altitude of 56 meters, and it's very close to Central Terminus. The Tram View Cafe next to this station is a good restaurant worth visiting.
The MacDonnell Road Station (麥當勞道站) is the third station after departing from the starting station, with an altitude of 95 meters. Both the upward and downward directions of this station have road bridges with a history of more than a century passing over the railway. After passing this station, the Peak Tram will enter the steepest section of the entire system, and the slope will slow down when the tram passes the Tram Passing Loop Area.
The Bowen Road Station (寶雲道站) is the fourth station after departing from the starting station, with an altitude of 100 meters. Due to the station being too close to MacDonnell Road Station, it was discontinued on Jan.01.1985 and the station's services were merged with MacDonnell Road Station. Today, the Bowen Road Station’s platform still remains.
The May Road Station (梅道站) is the fifth station after departing from the starting station, with an altitude of 180 meters. This station is located on the steepest section of Peak Tram, with a gradient of 49%. Passengers will find it extremely steep and difficult to walk on and off the tram at this station, and also difficult to walking on the tram. The May Road Station comprises a single platform on the western side of the single track. May Road passes over the tramway on a bridge at the downhill end of the station, with a passing loop at the Victoria Peak end allowing uphill and downhill trams to pass each other.
The Barker Road Station (白加道站) is the sixth station after departing from the starting station, with an altitude of 363 meters. As an intermediate station, the Barker Road Station is different from other intermediate stations, it has an indoor station structure, bright, clear and white decor, also has dedicated station entrances and exits. The classical appearance of this station can form a strong contrast with the bustling and modern city at the foot of the mountain!! After nightfall, the lights of this station are turned on, and combined with the seats inside the station, this quiet environment can form a beautiful scenery with the colorful night view of Victoria Harbor not far away!!
The Peak Terminus (山頂總站) is the seventh station after departing from the starting station, it's the terminal station and the highest station in this tramway system, with an altitude of 398 meters. The station was built in the basement of Peak Tower (凌霄閣), and the control room of tramway system is also in here. All tourists who enjoy the scenery and night view of Victoria Harbor will take the tram to this station, and then take the elevator up to the top-floor observation deck of Peak Tower, which is 428 meters above sea level.
