MUSIC TEACHER RESOURCES - Turn the Glasses Over

MUSIC TEACHING TIPS: Students should make two circles with the boys on the inside and the girls on the outside (or students with lanyards in the middle and students without lanyards on the outside). Girls and boys pair up with the person they are closest to. They hold hands and walk counter-clockwise, then wring the dishrag two times on "over, over." (Doing it more than two times usually ends up with students not being safe.) Then the girls hold hands and continue to walk counter-clockwise while the boys hold hands and walk clockwise. At the end of the song, they pair up again with the person nearest them. If the circles are too large, students are more likely to pair up incorrectly and leave someone out. So, if you have a large class, make two sets of circles. The words we used are "I've been to Harlaam, I've been to Dover,/I've travelled this wide world all over./Over, over, three times over,/Drink all you have to drink and turn the glasses over,/Sailing east, sailing west,/Sailing o'er the ocean./Better watch out when the boat begins to rock/Or you'll lose your girl in the ocean." The original lyrics are "Drink all the brandywine and turn the glasses over" but we substituted a few words that I found in another you tube clip that were more PG-rated. This is great for kindergarten and first grade (elementary school).
