Igoumenitsa (Thesprotia Epirus) Greece

Igoumenitsa is a port city situated in the northwestern region of Greece. It is the main port of the Regional unit of Thesprotia - Region of Epirus and one of the largest Greek passenger ports connecting northwestern mainland Greece with Italy and the Ionian Islands. Every year, millions of travellers travel to and from this city on ferries that connect to Ancona, Brindisi, Bari, Venice (Italy), and Patras and Corfu (Greece). Green mountains surround Igoumenitsa, and it has plenty of greenery and beaches with crystal clear waters. The city is well-connected with the new 670 km Egnatia Highway serving northern Greece. The city's main street stretches along the coastal zone, offering beautiful buildings and numerous restaurants. Almost every restaurant has an open terrace where you can enjoy the fantastic view of the coast while indulging in the local cuisine. Igoumenitsa boasts of two ports: The New Port and The Old Port. The New Port is Greece's second busiest passenger port, following Piraeus, and even surpasses the seaports of Iraklion (Crete) and Patras. The port area is a picturesque promenade with popular restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops. While enjoying a stunning sunset, you can admire the coastline and watch boats docked in the port.
The city is also home to several beautiful religious monuments, with the Annunciation to the Blessed Virgin Mary Orthodox Church being a prime example of national religious architecture. It was built at the end of the 20th century. The historic centre doesn't have many historic buildings due to destruction during the Second World War. Still, an archaeological museum houses artefacts from the Paleolithic to the Ottoman era. There are also some archaeological excavations on the outskirts of the city. The Castle of Igoumenitsa was built on a hill during Venetian rule. It was later partly destroyed during the battles with the Turks, but it is a beautiful place to visit today, surrounded by a pine forest. The Gulf of Igoumenitsa has beautiful sandy coves where the clear sea invites you to cool down. Nearby, Drepano Beach is among the area's longest sand beaches. It is located five kilometres from the city. Igoumenitsa is known for its pine forests and blue crystal waters, and it attracts many local travellers from nearby regions, specifically from Italy. The city allows for walks, such as walking at the beach or mountain, hiking, sports, boating, or touching nature. There are numerous hotels, restaurants, bars, traditional taverns and shops in Igoumenitsa. Igoumenitsa will undoubtedly appeal to all adventure fans because this city has everything needed for an active holiday.
