Take me inland to the rooster of Barcelos| Hike the Camino

After a challenging first day along the beaches out of Porto we headed inland from Vila do Conde to join up with the Central route in Rates and make our way to Barcelos.

When walking the Coastal Route, pilgrims can choose to join the Central Route at various points. One such option is from Vila do Conde to Barcelos:

1. Vila do Conde: This town is on the Coastal Route, known for its maritime heritage and beautiful sandy beaches. It’s a popular stop for pilgrims who are following the coast.
2. Connecting to the Central Route: From Vila do Conde, pilgrims can head inland to connect with the Central Route. The usual connection point is at Barcelos, a historic town famous for its ceramics and the legend of the rooster.
3. Barcelos: Once you reach Barcelos, you join the main Central Route, which continues northward towards Santiago de Compostela.

This diversion from the Coastal Route to the Central Route provides a blend of coastal scenery and inland cultural experiences, making it a popular choice for those looking to experience the best of both worlds on the Camino.

The route is a mix of farmland roads and a lot of the route on cobbled roads which is quite hard on feet. The entry over the bridge into Barcelos was spectacular, even though we were walking in the rain again.
