I'm Ted Norby, director of instruction for the National University Golf Academy. What I want to talk about today in the short game is what square is. And, I understand and there's a lot of players that open up a little bit and a lot of instructors that talk about opening up the stance a little bit in the short game. And the reason for that is I'm not making a full swing, so I don't have all that energy to get my body through. So absolutely I want this left foot pulled back a little bit. But for the average player, they open everything up too much and the only way to go toward the target line is then to rotate their upper body and now the weights all back in the stance.

So what I want to do for most players is get everything basically square then just pull this left foot back a little bit, pivot the left toe open just a little bit but I want to keep the shoulders square in the short game. That allows me to get this triangle of the arms that one piece to go through to the target. If I get everything open too much, now I'm cutting across everything. So as you square everything up, ball back ball forward, it doesn't matter what kind of shot were looking for, left foot opens a little bit but keep your hips and your shoulders square in the short game. That'll put you in a position where this triangle the club can work toward the target. Rather than pulling left and holding on to it.

So, yes I want the feet a little bit open so I can move through to the target a little better but don't let your whole body open up too much. That kicks your upper body back and the tendency to scoop the little short shot shows up. Square your shoulders up in the short game.
