Transitioning Cannabis From the Vegetative to the Flowering Stage

Making the Change
It can depend on the starting material and what type of plant type you are growing.



Seeds vs Clones
Photoperiod dependent vs Autoflowers
Seeds vs Clones
When timing the transition, be aware of the stage of root development.
Clones tend to have aggressive top (veg) growth quicker than seeds in the early stages so be sure to also inspect the roots.



Photoperiod Dependent vs Autoflowers
Photoperiod Dependent Strains: Change from the vegetative to the flowering growth cycles based purely on the duration of light (photoperiod) the plants are exposed to.
Autoflower Strains: Base the transition based only on plant age.



Indoor and Outdoor
These transitions will occur for both indoor and outdoor locations.
Indoor locations offer more grower control on the timing.
Outdoor growing will require growers to make decisions based on conditions that are out of the growers control.



Leaves or Buds
There is a need for a plant to produce quality leaves and good morphology to be able to support the flowers/buds.
While growers tend to focus on the buds, it is important to consider the general plant shape and productivity.
Without a quality plant structure, the buds will suffer so timing is important for growers to maximize total production.
