BA Design Management, International Event

Leaders in healthcare innovation, Dr. Thomas Zeltner and Dr. Ian Hargraves discussed pressing healthcare issues. Dr. Zeltner discussed:
a) Design for better teamwork
b) Design for better work-life balance and career development
c) Design for increased job satisfaction and the prevention of burnouts.

Dr. Hargraves talked about Shared Decision Making (SDM) as co-design and the need to adapt SDM to each patient’s problems. After the presentations, both engaged with Dr. Balthasar Hug, head of internal medicine at Lucerne Cantonal Hospital, in a panel discussion.

This event was a collaboration between BA Design Management, International and Lucerne Cantonal Hospital.

After the presentation a Panel Discussion that included also the presence of Dr. Balthasar Hug took place. The panel was moderated by Dr. Guillermina Noël, Head of the BA Design Management, International.

Speakers Bio

Prof. Dr. Thomas Zeltner is a Swiss physician and lawyer. He is the founder and chairman of the WHO Foundation in Geneva. The WHO Foundation is a grantmaking organization with the objective of addressing the most pressing global health challenges of tomorrow.
Dr. Zeltner is professor at the University of Bern, Switzerland, in Public Health. He is President of the UNESCO Commission of Switzerland. He advises the Swiss government in the implementation and future development of The National Health Policy. He has recently been appointed to serve the Swiss Red Cross as its president.
From 1991 to 2009 Thomas Zeltner has been Secretary of Health and Director-General of the Federal Office of Public Health of Switzerland, the National Health and Public Health Authority.
As Director-General of the Federal Office of Public Health of Switzerland he was a key figure in Swiss health policy, and instrumental in fostering health promotion and disease prevention. He has presided over changes to transform the regulated market model of the Swiss healthcare sector into a more value and public driven health care system.

Dr. Ian Hargraves is a designer, shared decision-making researcher, and assistant professor of medicine with the Mayo Clinic Knowledge and Evaluation Research Unit in Rochester, Minnesota. Ian holds a Ph.D. in design from Carnegie Mellon University, where he also taught design theory and practice for several years. In his current position, Ian works alongside clinicians, patients, and health services researchers, designing conversations to support patients and clinicians in shared decision-making. He also writes with them on ways of understanding and organizing shared decision-making. He works towards finding out how to best support goals in care conversations in relation to diverse conditions and different healthcare settings. His approach to shared decision-making is shifting the understanding of what it means to engage in care conversations, from decisions to change treatment to decisions that change life.
