The rear bumper has to be removed on this SL 63 AMG, ...
.. if e.g. a Parktronic sensor is defective or the rear bumper paint is damaged.
Raise vehicle to a suitable working height using a vehicle lift.
Press fender liner to the side in order to facilitate access to the first bolt.
Remove the second bolt.
The next three bolts form a connection between the bumper and heat shield.
Also remove these.
Remove the two bolts underneath the rear bumper.
Remove the same five mounting bolts on the passenger side.
Lower vehicle and open the trunk lid.
Actuate the Vario roof switch to do so.
Switch off the ignition.
Open the trunk with the emergency key.
Move the trunk lid to the assembly position.
Support the trunk lid with a suitable tool.
This avoids damage to the tubular frame or trunk lid hinge.
Remove trunk partition.
Remove one expansion rivet on the right and left side using an assembly wedge.
The partition is only clipped in place at the rear.
Open the clips by hand.
Open the quick-release coupling on the left and right.
The trunk partition is thus loose and can be taken out.
Remove the mounts and fittings for the trunk partitions.
Remove one bolt from each.
Note: On the right-hand fitting, disconnect the connector for the limit switch.
Lift out floor covering and spare wheel well trim.
Remove trim of rear center section.
To do so, remove the trim from the trunk lid lock striker.
Continue with the four highlighted expansion clips.
Remove the four screw clips.
Loosen trim of rear center section far enough that ...
... the connectors of the trunk lamp and 12 V socket become accessible.
Remove trim.
Unscrew the y-fitting shown here.
This allows the left and right trunk lining to be removed later.
Remove the same y-fitting on the right.
Remove the two luggage net brackets.
Remove the three expansion clips with an assembly wedge.
Remove the access opening cover.
Unclip the catch tab to do so.
Loosen the rubber seal so that the trunk lining is easier to take out.
Remove the trunk lining in the same way on the driver side.
Remove the bolts of the control unit bracket for the Airscarf.
Slide the bracket up and remove.
Remove the insulation mat in the opening.
Remove the two bolts which attach the bumper to the body.
The fender drops down slightly when the bolts are loose.
Perform the same procedure on the passenger side.
Remove the two slightly concealed nuts from the rear center section.
All bolts of the rear bumper are now removed.
Disconnect PTS connector.
Take off the rear bumper with the help of an assistant.
Guide the electric wiring harness of the connector through the opening in the body.
Note for repair operations on PTS:
When installing sensor, make sure that the silicone ring is seated correctly.
For optimal operation of the PTS, the sensor must be seated straight and fit exactly in the bumper.
