THIS SONG IS RELATED TO UTTARAYANI (GHUGHUTIYA TYAR). GHUGHUTIYA FESTIVAL IS FAMOUS IN KUMAON REGION AND CELEBRATED IN TOO MUCH FERVER.
The Ghughutiya or Uttarayani Festival is one of the most vibrant and culturally rich celebrations in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. Rooted in centuries-old traditions, this festival is an amalgamation of spirituality, gratitude, and environmental harmony. Celebrated with enthusiasm in the Kumaon region, it signifies the arrival of the Uttarayan phase of the sun, a celestial event that marks the sun's movement towards the northern hemisphere. This shift is believed to herald a time of prosperity, warmth, and hope.
The Ghughutiya festival draws its name from Ghughuti, a migratory bird commonly seen during this time of year. According to folklore, the festival began as a tribute to these migratory birds, acknowledging their importance in the region's ecosystem. Additionally, the festival intertwines with the broader Makar Sankranti celebrations observed across India, marking the end of the winter solstice and the transition into longer, sunnier days.
From a mythological perspective, the festival is linked to the sun's journey, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness. This theme is celebrated in various forms, from rituals to folk songs and dances.
The festivities of Ghughutiya are a colorful blend of rituals, food, and community bonding. Each aspect of the celebration carries profound cultural and ecological significance. One of the most iconic elements of this festival is the preparation of Ghughute—sweet, deep-fried dough made from wheat flour, jaggery, and ghee. The dough is shaped into various patterns, such as spirals, birds, and small chains, symbolizing creativity and devotion. These treats are strung together to form garlands, which children wear around their necks during the celebration. On the morning of the festival, children go to open fields or rooftops wearing their garlands of Ghughute and offer the treats to birds. They sing melodious folk songs, inviting the CROW with lines like:
"Kale Kauva, Kale Ghughuti, Mala Khale"

This translates to "Come, black crow and Ghughuti bird, enjoy these treats." This ritual reflects the community’s harmonious relationship with nature and their gratitude towards the avian world. In addition to cultural activities, Uttarayani is deeply spiritual. Many devotees take a holy dip in the rivers like Saryu, Ganga, or Kosi, believing it cleanses them of their sins. Special prayers are offered to the sun god, thanking him for sustaining life on Earth.
Folk songs and dances performed during Uttarayani preserve and promote the region’s rich cultural heritage. These art forms serve as a medium to narrate stories, share wisdom, and unite communities. Despite its enduring charm, the Ghughutiya festival faces challenges such as urbanization, climate change, and shifting lifestyle patterns.
The Ghughutiya or Uttarayani Festival is much more than a regional celebration; it is a testament to Uttarakhand’s profound cultural and ecological consciousness. By blending spirituality, folklore, and environmental harmony, the festival offers a timeless message of hope, gratitude, and unity. As communities come together to honor nature, tradition, and each other, Ghughutiya continues to shine as a beacon of joy and reverence in the cultural mosaic of India.
