It is all about the busing of the NVME drives. SAS, SATA and NVME cards all have one thing in common, data channel bus to move data. Just like it is true about SAS controllers and the channels they so do NVME quad cards. I have found if I only use one of the slots but double the size of the drive and then do that for the second pair, The I/O is higher then having two NVME drives in slot one and two. So if you have a card with four slots, Only use Slot 1 and slot 3 and avoid using slots 2 and 4, it means only one drive on a single channel. Better results but I need a few more cards to confirm but promising.
