Starting on Tuesday until just before Christmas, Keelung’s Miaokou night market will begin its long overdue renovation works: to clean up and smooth out the flooring under the arcades. Even though business will be affected, vendors say they are more than happy to close up shop for a few days, if that means a better experience for everyone. Luckily, not all stalls will close: the first stage will only cover the section between Ai 3rd Road and Ren 4th Road.

Visitors are spoiled for choice at Keelung’s Miaokou Night Market. But starting this Tuesday they’ll all be off the table for a while, as the area undergoes a 13-day renovation.

If they flatten things inside, it’s better for visitors, because it’ll be safer for kids and the elderly.

Despite a pause in business, vendors are mostly happy about it. They say the works are long overdue. Just look at the floor under the arcade: there are broken tiles and steps along the way. It’s quite a hazard for pedestrians.

This area should be kept open and we’ll install a slope here, so it’s easier for wheelchair users and moms pushing a stroller.

With financing from the central government, the renovation works can finally begin. From Dec. 10 to Dec. 22, vendors on Ren 3rd Road will be off. Meanwhile, it’ll be business as usual on Ai 4th Road.

In the next dozen days, our residents and visitors from all over the country are advised not to come to the Miaokou area.

Two weeks may seem like a long time, but hang in there. Soon the night market will be much more walkable, making for a better experience for vendors and customers alike.
