The BJP government passed the anti-conversion law in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in December 2021, but could not get it passed in the Legislative Council where it did not have a majority. It then issued an ordinance on May 17, 2022, which was replaced by an act four months later on September 30.

The ruling Congress government appears to have forgotten its promise to repeal the law. The law has real life implications on people. TNM’s Shivani Kava investigated how sub-registrars in Bengaluru are asking for parents to be witnesses in inter-faith marriages, though the rules don’t mandate it. Anisha Sheth looked at the number of cases booked under the law and how individuals are being targeted using the law.
