We embarked on a delightful journey through the historic lanes of Hussainabad in Lucknow to buy stuff for Iftar and were joined by Sarah, a passionate young climate activist and her friends. Our first stop was Haji Ashfaq Tea and Lassi Corner, a beloved spot with over 50 years of legacy. Here, we bought sakhe, a savory fried snack and some chane ki burfi, an Eid special sweet.

Next, we visited the legendary Ali Hussain Sheermal shop, an iconic establishment dating back to 1830. The story of this place is rooted in history; Muhamdu, a cook from the reign of Nawab Nasir-ud-din Haider, is credited with creating sheermal by improvising on the baqarkhani bread. It was supposed to accompany the popular breakfast dish, nihari. After the decline of royal patronage, Muhamdu’s successor, Ali Hussain, introduced Sheermal here in Lucknow. The shop, still standing in its original location, is now run by the 7th-generation owner, Mohammad Umar, and his family.

We were fortunate to witness the making of sheermal and learn some of the secrets behind its preparation. The owner generously shared numerous anecdotes, clearly taking immense pride in his craft. We packed some sheermal and continued our journey to Mubeen, another legendary spot established in 1973, where we purchased some chicken pasanda to pair with the sheermal.

Our next stop was Maulana Sweets, where we packed some delicious chicken samosas. Finally, we headed to Chota Imambara, where we had obtained permission to have Iftar and film our experience. We shared the food with our wonderful friends, proud residents of Lucknow. It was a truly special experience to be in Lucknow during Ramazan, absorbing the rich culture and traditions of this beautiful city.

Don't miss out on this incredible journey!
