Located in the county of Buckinghamshire, and around 25 miles west of central London, is the town of Beaconsfield (pronounced 'BECK-ons-field').

The first written record of the town dates back to 1185 where it was spelt as 'Bekenesfeld', meaning 'beechen field' or 'clearing in the beeches'. A charter was granted to Beaconsfield in 1255 by Henry III to hold a weekly market.

Due to its geographic location roughly halfway between London and Oxford, Beaconsfield was a common resting place for travellers in the centuries before the railways came into being. The town was home to several coaching inns, where coach operators and their horses could rest. A few of these still stand today, including The White Hart, The Royal Saracens Head and other buildings which have been repurposed as commercial properties. It should be noted that The Royal Saracens Head's exterior was rebuilt in 1893, which explains its mock Tudor appearance.

It took until the 20th century for Beaconsfield to receive a railway connection. In 1906 it opened about a mile to the north of where this walk takes place, in what became Beaconsfield New Town. This is a separate built up area which serves as a handy commuting hub for those travelling in to London via Chiltern Railways. It is home to the National Film and Television School, as well as the oldest model village in the world - Bekonscot.

Author Terry Pratchett came from Beaconsfield.
