Today, Viola and I are visiting Raj Bar & Restaurant, behind Goa University students in Odxel, near Dona Paula and Panjim in central Goa. The bar, which has a nice view, has been serving excellent fish, chicken and mutton curry rice plates here for decades, expanding from a small taverna to a full restaurant

Raj Bar & Restaurant is located in Odxel, near Dona Paula, on the shore behind the Konkan Development Society. From Caranzalem in Panjim, follow the Dona Paula Road. This road is called Dr Jack de Sequeira Road in Google Maps. Turn left at Dona Paula circle towards Goa University. This road is called Dr E Borges Road in Google Maps. Continue straight, then take the right turn at the Goa Business School and Manohar Parrikar School of Law. Follow the road straight downward to Odxel. You can also just follow the signs for Bay 15. Once you reach almost down to the bay, you will see Bay 15 on the right and Raj bar on the left, where there is ample parking
Costs we paid: Fish curry rice plate Rs 200, xinaneo rawa fry Rs 500, gobro masala fry Rs 400
Raj is known for its fish thali, which is really tasty. We had reached 30 minutes early and waited till 1 pm, when Raj bar opens for the day. That’s why the restaurant was empty when we arrived but this didn't last for long.
As we were early, we could choose a table with a view to the somewhat cluttered beach and then the sea beyond
At Raj, the fish in the fish curry rice plate is fixed for the day. On the day we went, it was modso fish curry and modso fry. We shared two thalis, gobro masala fry and xinaneo rawa fry.
Raj’s fish curry rice plate of the day had teesrio, flower bhaji, sal kari, pickle, salad, modso, modso curry and rice. They don’t give kismur
The fish curry was excellent. The modso was very crispy. The teesrio and xinaneo quite fresh and perfectly cooked. No wonder this place is packed at lunch time
It was great to revisit Raj bar, which remains an old favourite for all who are looking for a homely Goan meal around Panjim-Dona Paula
