Its here, the ProRes update has arrived (But not the Apple one yet). Filmic Pro recently updated their app to version 6.17 which supports the ProRes output. So I went straight out for a quick video test. First, you might wonder do we really need ProRes? Is that a gimmick? The answer is yes and no. I personally think ProRes on a phone is overkilling. I would say its just like the DNG RAW photo on a phone. Yea its RAW but also at the same time its just a phone photo. And I think you can apply that story to the ProRes video. Some people may want it some may not.

Mind you, the 13mm doesn’t have the image stabilization. But when you use the original camera app. Apple sort of does the electronic IS for you. But with the Filmic Apple, the IS is disabled completely. Also the early version of the ProRes update does not support picture profile. So I couldn’t use Log for better dynamic range (Maybe have to wait for the next update)

Overall I’m impressed with the this iPhone 13 Pro. And surely Apple gave us the biggest update for video shooting. The ProRes video does give you better codec to work with. Even though the quality is nice, but I know I wouldn’t be using ProRes most of the time. The workflow is just not practical. 6GB per min is over killing. Like in this little video test. I shot about 126GB of footage and took almost an hour just to transfer the files to my computer. The lightning port is extremely slow. In the end, even the quality is higher. But you could still tell it was shot on a phone due to the tiny sensor.
