Imaginaries Literary Podcast #5.1

This is a story from our favorite narrator, Daniel! We hope you enjoy.

When Lina was 11, her Opa Karl had a stroke; he had expected it for some time – talked about having one as one talks about an appointment – “When I have my stroke, Schatzi, you’ll have to remember to take the rubbish,” he’d said to his wife. When it came, it only surprised him in coming so late.

Opa = Grandpa
Schatzi = (My) Sweetie
the mountain village etched on the cover = It was called, “Călătorii în vale”
Vati = Dad
Mutti = Mum
Oma = Grandma
Zwetschgenkuchen = Plum cake
“Bert, my Angel”. “Bert” is a diminutive of a number of German names, all containing -bert, such as Hubert, Albert, Robert and Berthold.
A reception of sorts; rather than a wake or viewing, it celebrates the dead in his or her presumed absence, with the family and friends eating together. The word means, more or less, “Corpse Feast.”
einem alten Doppelhaus = A duplex or townhouse; in this case, an older model
mein Engel = My Angel
Lina, Liebchen = Dear, Beloved (diminutive)
