Swim Analysis - Tom

Thanks for coming along to the Cairns swim session. It was really great to meet you. Let's jump into your swim analysis. Despite the past damage to your shoulder, there are some great takeaways from this session.

Focus on Shoulder Protection:
The first focus point is protecting that right shoulder. We can see your right hand goes in super short. When your entry is short, you have to push against the water to reach out in front, which always causes resistance.

Right Side Pull and Kick:
Once you start to pull on the right side, you can see that you slip through the catch phase and push out a little wide. Because of this movement, your kick acts as a stabilizer. The big issue with these counter moves is the overcompensation on the left side, resulting in your body curving to use larger back muscles to drag your right arm through the water.

Left Hand Entry and Body Alignment:
When your left hand enters the water, it crosses over the center line of your body and then pushes out to align with your shoulders as you glide. A large lateral shift in the upper body causes a chain reaction down to the hips and legs. We can see the drift through the hips is quite severe, leading to a large kick to correct and stabilize your body. The little head wobble is a byproduct of these movements.

Post-Drill Improvement:
This clip shows your progress after working on the stabilizing drill of closing the gap between the side of your head and your arm. It's already looking a lot more balanced. Let's continue with a few stabilizing drills to get the catch position under control and integrate some body roll drills to correct the large spinal movement we see here.

Plan for Improvement:
Honestly, what we picked up here shows a lot of wasted energy going into swimming like this, but there is a clear plan to get your posture under control.

Good work, Tom!
