Episode 23: Lucky to Be Alive

We're lucky to be alive! Literally. The fumes emitted by overheated batteries are potentially explosive and toxic, and it was evident that the battery banks located under the master berth had been emitting these fumes for at least several days before we discovered the issue.

Here's what happened: Our already long day of very bouncy cruising — we planned for about 8-1/2 hours — became even longer when we couldn't get our anchor windlass to deploy the anchor once we reached our planned destination. After discovering that the windlass and bow thruster battery banks had melted from excessive heat obviously caused by a severe system failure, we cruised for another couple of hours to Grand Manor Marina in Belhaven, North Carolina.

The crew at Grand Manor Marina (https://grandmanormarina.com/) provided service that went well beyond what we could have ever expected from the moment we arrived until we departed about a week later. We didn't get to the marina until nearly two hours after their normal closing time, but they stuck around to ensure we landed safely (our bow thruster was also inoperative because of the battery meltdown and it was very windy when we landed).

River Forest Shipyard (https://riverforestshipyard.com/) got on the job the very next morning and made great effort to get us back on our way as quickly as possible.

In the end, we were blessed to spend time in Belhaven, a small town with incredibly kind residents. That was the silver lining on what could have been a very black cloud. If you get a chance, make some time to visit.
