On the eve of the Indigenous All Stars’ game, Emma sits down with her uncle and AFL legend Derek Kickett for this special episode of Paint It Blak.

Derek comes from Tammin, a small country town in Western Australia. It’s where he first picked up a football and learnt his craft. From there, Derek played in the WAFL, for West Perth, then Claremont, winning a Premiership in 1987 and despite receiving a record number of votes, that same year, Derek was unfortunately ineligible to win the Sandover Medal.

From there Derek was drafted to the AFL, aged 26, heading to North Melbourne for a year, before playing for Essendon under Kevin Sheedy and then finishing his AFL playing career with the Sydney Swans, who is still his favourite AFL team.

Derek talks to Emma about his playing career, the challenges he faced, including racism from fellow players and crowds, and why he believes teenagers shouldn’t be drafted into the AFL.

Emma Garlett is a Nyungar-Nyiyaparli-Yamatji woman from Geraldton. She is a legal academic and an Industry Fellow at the Sustainable Minerals Institute at The University of Queensland.

Prior to commencing a career in academia, Emma practised as a solicitor in planning and environment law at a top-tier law firm in Perth.

She is passionate about justice, law reform and ensuring First Nations people are involved in decisions which affect them.
