Idumban is a great devotee of Lord Muruga and a great disciple of sage Agastya as well according to Tamil mythology. Idumban is also seen as one of the guardians of Muruga's temples in Tamil Nadu. During Thai Poosam celebrations in the Tamil month of Thai, Tamil people observe a ritual practice of Kavadi Aattam to obtain blessings from Muruga.In the ritual practice, before entering into the shrine, people used to worship Idumban.

Palani or Palni as in British records, is a town and a taluk headquarters in Dindigul district of the western part of Tamil Nadu state in India. It is located about 106 kilometres (66 mi) south-east of Coimbatore and 122 kilometres (76 mi) north-west of Madurai, 67 kilometres from Kodaikanal. The Palani Murugan Temple or Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple (Thiru Avinankudi), dedicated to Lord Murugan is situated on a hill overlooking the town. The temple is visited by more than 7 million pilgrims each year. which makes it the second largest town in the district after Dindigul.
