The thyroid gland is an endocrine gland,situated in the lower part of the front and sides of the neck.It produces a)T3 and T4(Thyroid hormones)and b)Calcitonin-which plays an important role in calcium metabolism
It is the only endocrine gland located superficially( against the vertebrae C5,C6,C7and T1,clasping the upper part of trachea)and depends on external environment for raw materials such as iodine to synthesize hormones.
