September 15th, 2012. Billed as “Knockout Kings”, former WBA Light Welterweight Champion Marcos Maidana took on Jesus Soto Karass for the vacant WBA International Welterweight Title as part of the undercard of the Canelo Alvarez vs Josesito Lopez main event.

This was Maidana’s 2nd fight at Welterweight. He made his 147 pound debut in February 2012 against Devon Alexander where he lost a lopsided UD12.

Prefight records; Maidana 31(28)-3, Karass 26(17)-7-3.

From the opening round, the hard hitters began trading bombs with Maidana being slightly more effective over Karass as he showed an improved jab and overall better ring generalship since hooking up with new trainer Robert Garcia.

Jesus started to focus on body punching in rounds 2 and 3 although Marcos was still landing the overall better punches particularly to the head.

Both fighters were deducted a point simultaneously in round 4 for a variety of fouls.

After an action packed and pretty even round 5, Maidana slowed down and was hurt a number of times in round 6 as Karass’ work downstairs began to pay dividends.

As the bell sounded to start round 7, Marcos appeared to have recovered and both fighters exchanged at near even terms again. However, the turning point of the fight occurred with about 20 seconds left in the round when Jesus was nailed with a hard left hook to the body and then floored with a barrage of power punches upstairs.

The accumulation of punishment finally wore Karass down as Maidana hurt him again early in round 8, and despite his courageous efforts to return fire he was ultimately overwhelmed by the nonstop fusillades of blows which prompted referee Kenny Bayless to step in to halt the unflinching assault.
