First is the Single Pole Single Throw, or SPST. The SPST is your basic on/off toggle switch, and is used to connect or break the connection between two terminals. This type of switch is commonly used for simple tasks, such as a light switch.

Next is the single pole double throw, or SPDT. This is a three terminal switch where one terminal is used as input and the remaining two terminals are used as outputs. SPDT switches are often used in instances where you have a three-way circuit to turn a lot on or off from two different locations, such as the top and bottom of a staircase.

The double pole, single throw or DPST consists of two poles, which essentially act as two switches arranged side by side. This switch is used to turn two circuits on and off and consists of four terminals. These switches are mainly used to regulate 240V appliances where both supply voltages need to be on and the unbiased wire must always be connected.

Finally, the double pole double throw, or DPDT is essentially equivalent to two SPDT switches. This means that there are two separate circuits that connect two inputs of each circuit to one of two outputs. The way that the switch is positioned controls the number of ways that the contacts can be routed.
