Sailing on Tasmania's Gordon River for 2,000 nights is Trevor's job | ABC Australia

Trevor Norton’s job is sailing to the World Heritage Gordon River to pick up groups who have rafted the famous Franklin River. 2,000 nights on the Gordon River aren't enough for this old-school skipper.

That’s a 23 hour return voyage from Strahan, surrounded by mountains, rainforest and stunning river reflections.

Along the way he sails for three hours on Macquarie Harbour which is six and a half times bigger than Sydney Harbour.

Usually, he and his deckie Rob are the only sailors on this enormous waterway and like to put the 65 tonne Stormbreaker through its paces.

Once on the Gordon River, they motor for hours across the perfectly reflecting tannin-black waters, with every square metre clad in thick temperate rainforest.

There are many unique species here, including the ancient Huon pine. The Franklin rafters flow into the Gordon just above Sir John Falls, where they await Trevor’s arrival.

Early in the morning Trevor wakes the weary adventurers at 5am and they set off towards Strahan in the magical morning mist and stillness.

At 66, Trevor just logged his 2000th overnighter in one of Australia’s wildest and most remote places. As you’ll see he’s too fit and happy to ever retire.
