Bergin & Garfield's Handbook (7 ed.) Webinar Series

Presented by Michael Barkham, Wolfgang Lutz, & Louis G. Castonguay on May 28th, 2024

Webinar Abstract:
In this final presentation of the Bergin and Garfield Handbook of Psychotherapy and Behavior Change webinar series, we will provide both a historical and a future perspective on the study of change and outcome in psychological therapies. Reflecting the evolution and internationality of the field, several key questions have been addressed over the course of the previous webinars dedicated to the 50th anniversary edition of the Handbook. In this concluding and summary webinar, we will discuss current and emerging perspectives on optimizing outcome measures, therapist use of measures to improve clinical practice, moderators, clinical and statistical decision-making models, feedback-informed treatment, and evidence-based personalization for at-risk patients. In addition, shifting focus, we will survey the landscape of efficacy and effectiveness research and practice-based evidence in psychological therapies over the past decade, exploring general and specific efficacy and effectiveness and the world of small effects in real-world settings, as well as studies of cost-effectiveness, cultural and ethnic diversity, dosage and therapist effects from a randomized controlled trial and clinical effectiveness perspective. Bridging science and practice initiatives will be highlighted, providing a nuanced perspective on the intersection of research and clinical practice in the diverse landscape of today’s psychological therapies around the world.
