Hinduism For Beginners - Basic Concepts Of Sanatan Dharma

Hinduism is diverse; no single set of beliefs can represent its numerous traditions. Nonetheless, the various beliefs share several basic concepts, which help us to understand how most Hindus see and respond to the world. Hinduism begins simply by differentiating between spirit and matter. Spirit includes two things, namely Aatman, which is the individual self, or soul and Brahman, which is the Supreme Self, Universal Soul or God. Atman means 'eternal self'. The ‘Self’ here does not represent our mortal body. Instead it refers to the immortal part of an individual's self that will exist for eternity. It refers to the ‘soul’. Brahman is the supreme universal spirit that is eternal and unchanging. Hindu holy books refer to Brahman as being present throughout the entire universe and Hindus believe that all living beings carry a part of Brahman within them which is the Atman. The goal is to realize that Atman and Brahman are one, that our individual souls are part of the universal soul. It's like realizing we're all drops in the same ocean.
