The "Building a Champion" series here on the Sports for Days channel highlights underdog seasons where teams who were overlooked, rose to the occasion when the situation called for it & won at the highest level, beating the odds & exceeding all expectations.

Its June 2004 & the Pistons are aiming to win their 3rd championship in team history, but it took a lot for them to get to this point. In the 1980s, The Pistons were known as a tough & gritty team led by Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars & Bill Laimbeer. Nicknamed the “Bad Boys” for their physical play & fierce attidudes, they were responsible for holding back the leagues golden child, Michael Jordan, from winning championships early in his career. They won back-to-back rings in 1989 & 1990 but age & injuries caught up to them & ended the bad boy era. The Pistons then lucked up & drafted who was supposed to be one of the best players of the next generation but by the late 90s that didn’t turn out the way they hoped so the Pistons hired one of the former bad boys as their team president to turn things around & that’s exactly what he did. He got rid of a few all-star fan favorites to bring in some young unproven talent but it paid off as the team made steady improvements year after year & by 2004 they made a championship run where they beat the odds & ended one of the greatest dynasties that the NBA has ever seen.
