2023 Mazda CX-60 Diesel: The SUV that is bucking the trend.

Описание к видео 2023 Mazda CX-60 Diesel: The SUV that is bucking the trend.

Late last year, when we first drove the plug-in hybrid version of the new Mazda CX-60 (   • Mazda CX-60: Mazda's new flagship CX-...  ), we expressed surprise that Mazda were adopting a such a similar approach to pretty much every car company, as the Japanese brand had always been one that does things its own way, especially when it comes to engineering. Well, that normality certainly didn't last long, and Mazda is now back to its bonkers best. Why? Well, while every other manufacturer is hastily backing away from the petrochemical pariah that is diesel, Mazda has gone and spent a bunch of cash on developing an all-new 3.3-litre in-line six-cylinder turbodiesel engine. You just couldn't make this stuff up.

Crowbarred into the CX-60 SUV, you can have this engine with 251bhp and four-wheel drive, but in this CarGurus UK video, Vicky Parrott has a shot in the lower-powered rear-wheel-drive version, which packs 197bhp. This gets the car from 0-62mph in 7.4sec, and can achieve 56.5mpg according to WLTP figures, thanks to a 48-volt mild hybrid system.

But is the CX-60 diesel actually any good? To find out, VP takes a look at the latest car's quality, practicality, technology, value for money, and of course, what it's like to drive.

The CarGurus verdict
The CX-60 is a typical Mazda in that it delivers an engaging driving experience and lots of creature comforts in a package that’s stylish, well made and really impressive for interior quality. You’ll judge for yourself whether the quality really is a match for the likes of Audi, BMW and Mercedes as Mazda claims, but we’d say that it certainly isn’t far off.

Granted, it probably won’t suit everyone. Those after ultimate comfort might be put off by the slightly firm ride, and although the drivetrain is fine, it could be a little more polished. But if you’re after a family SUV with a hint of something a little bit different about it, then we’d say the CX-60 is well worth a look.

Pros
High quality interior
Large boot
Enjoyable to drive

Cons
Slightly firm ride
PHEV system could be more polished
Some key equipment items merely optional
