The Aymaras, and later the Incas, were primarily agrarian societies, and their respect to Pachamama (Mother Earth) was great, as they worship her daily, and nothing was done before making offerings to her. The Aymaras and the Incas knew the fragility of the earth very well, and they lived in harmony with it. One example is the fact that they would plant a parcel one year and move onto another parcel the following year, all to let the land replenish its nutrients. Today, however, just like in many parts of the world, land is being maxed out and poisoned with chemical fertilizers. In the tropics, lush forests are being cleared for farming and extraction of timber. This piece represents the plight and suffering of Pachamama.
