Salona was the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia, located in the south-eastern part of the Adriatic coast. It was abandoned during the Migration Period. Later, to the east of the ancient city of Salona, the medieval city of Solin was built, 6 km from Split.
Salona was founded in the 4th century BC. Originally it was the base and port of the Illyrian Dalmatae. In the immediate vicinity were the Greek settlements of Tragurion (Trogir) and Epetion (Stobreč), foundations of the colony of Issa. It is first mentioned in the sources in 119 BC, when L. Caecilius Metellus wintered there with his army. There was also a settlement of Italic traders and settlers here. In 78/77 BC the city was conquered by the Roman proconsul C. Cosconius. After the civil war between Caesar and Magnus Pompeius, Salona was given the status of a Roman colony (Colonia Martia Iulia Salona) between 47 and 44 BC. At an unclear point in time, but definitely before 28 BC, the Roman province of Illyria was established. Presumably following the Illyrian uprising in 6-9 AD, the administrative unit was divided into the provinces of Illyricum superius and Illyricum inferius - the former was given the name Dalmatia in the following period, the latter was called Pannonia. In the 1st/2nd century Salona experienced its heyday, for the 2nd century the number of inhabitants is estimated at around 60,000. The emperor Diocletian (284-305), who came from Dalmatia, had a large palace built not far from Salona (Diocletian's Palace), where he retired after his abdication in 305. Salona was called Valeria, after his family name (nomen gentile).
After the division of the Empire in 395, the province of Dalmatia became part of the Western Roman Empire and after its final collapse in 476, Dalmatia belonged to the Kingdom of Odoacer. Between 449 and 458, the city was attacked by Huns and Goths. The Avars and Slavs destroyed the city around 613/614. The inhabitants moved to Diocletian's palace or to the offshore islands of the Adriatic.
