Yuvrani Meenal Kumari Singhdeo and Princess Yashavini Kumari Devi of Dhenkanal, Odisha conducted the seventh lecture in the series, 'Resilience: Historic Houses of India and Their Custodians'.
Yuvrani Meenal Kumari of Dhenkanal was born in the erstwhile princely state of Wankaner. Daughter of the renowned environmentalist, bureaucrat and author MK Ranjitsinh and Kalpana Kumari. Her early education began at the International School, Bangkok, where her father was on deputation with the United Nations. She completed her schooling from Maharani Gayatri Devi Girls School where she was House Captain and the ‘Best All Round Student & Gold Medallist. Graduating with Honours in English Literature from Lady Shriram College, University of Delhi went on to complete her Bachelor of Education degree at NCERT Bhubaneswar.
After marriage to Yuvraj Amarjyoti Singhdeo of Dhenkanal seeing tourism as the possible future for maintaining the property, they started to restore the palace. Today they run Dhenkanal Palace as a Heritage Homestay.
With a passion for Art, Craft and Textiles, a widely travelled connoisseur she began working with the local artisans in and around Dhenkanal giving them designs by adding modern day utility to them. Having formal training in Art she paints herself. ‘Minaketan’ as a brand was born with the objective of encouraging and bringing to the fore the local arts and crafts. She works with Dhokra, Weaving, Pattachitra, Wood carving, Bell metal among others. She has exhibited and showcased handicrafts and handlooms of Odisha through various platforms in the country and abroad.
A lot of her time is dedicated to the upliftment and welfare of the artisans. Realising the negative effects of the pandemic on the crafts persons, with support from her family and the online community she has been able to extend a helping hand to over 600 families. For this She has been recognised as a ‘Neighborhood Hero’ by the HDFC Bank.
Yashasvini Kumari Devi belongs to the erstwhile state of Dhenkanal, in Odisha. A student of La Martiniere for Girls' School, Kolkata, and Mayo College Girls School, Ajmer where she was awarded the School Colours for excellence in quizzing and a scholarship for creative writing, She completed her graduation in Philosophy from Lady Shri Ram College for Women, University of Delhi. As a student of LSR, she was awarded a Certificate of Excellence for Meritorious Contribution to Public Speaking (Model United Nations).
Yashasvini went on to receive her MA in History and Philosophy of Art from the University of Kent, Canterbury. As part of her Masters She received the British Council Scholarship as well as spent a semester abroad at the American University of Rome, where she studied Renaissance Art and Museum Management. An equestrian enthusiast, with a keen interest in the crafts, history, reading, writing and traveling she uses her blog and social media as a creative outlet. Her poetry has also been published as part of an anthology by Shireen, an Indian poetry collective. Having spent a lot of her time as a student in museums and galleries abroad, she returned to Odisha in 2018 with the objective of conservation and promotion of Odisha’s rich cultural heritage and has been working in the sector with a focus on the textiles and handicrafts of the state. As the Museum Associate of Kala Bhoomi, the Odisha Crafts Museum, she has developed policies for efficient administration of the museum as well as initiated creative development as a tool for the enhancement of visitor experience. She has also helped streamline a course for Handicrafts Management for the State Institute for Development of Arts and Crafts of the Handloom, Textile and Handicrafts Department, Government of Odisha.
