MAINA SYNOPSIS
Short film ‘Maina’ revolves around the need of education and self-respect among women, which ultimately need to, and should mould a better perspective towards their lives and its challenges and issues. It also draws a parallel between two women of different socio economic stature encountering close to similar circumstances and how education and exposure liberates one and how the same constraints the other through precondition, social decorum and norms.
The protagonist Maina is a married woman, mother of a tenth standard girl who is of Tamil origin settled in Kerala. She works as a sweeper in a college where she builds a rapport with an English professor Indu. Indu’s sublime character filled with kindness and empathy enthuses Maina to approach her for sessions of book reading and learning English language within her constraints and limitations. Maina occasionally takes small loans from Indu to fund the education of her daughter Valli who possess a commendable level of academic brilliance. Maina shares her concern regarding her husband Murugan, who is a tailor by profession for not supporting the family nor the education of their daughter. She battles strong feeling of dejection and dismay when Murugan treats her with lack of respect and appreciation but gathers herself together in front of the world. Indu on the otherside lives a subdued life overpowered by her husband who is financially wreck less and expects Indu to push herself to all limits to satisfy his egos and snobbishness. One day Maina goes missing after leaving the college in surprise and astonishment after a distorted and aberrated dance in the college canteen which is totally unlikely of a Maina which they are aware of across a span of more than a decade. She goes missing after that and Indu goes in search of her to discover that Maina has left after pledging the house and gold ornaments which she had saved for her daughter. Indu was informed that this was reaction to an incident of her husband eloping with another woman and taking his daughter along. Indu tries to search for Maina, but all her efforts goes in vane. Indu is clueless and assumes that Maina is no more.
After a few years, to Indu’s surprise, Maina vists her house. Maina briefs Indu about her husband and daughter leaving her. She tells Indu that just like the husband and daughter chose to live their life, she herself had the choice and right to live her life. She tells Indu that she pledged the house and sold the gold, to go around and see places, which Indu had read to her about. She remembers the encouragement and advice which her father’s friend Menon Sir gave her. She thanks Indu for enquiring about her and making her feel wanted. Film concludes on a note where the transformed Maina shares her thought about the world to be a place which should not be divided by geometric, racial and cultural boundaries, during her Visa interview.
