The rise of IZ*ONE: How the last Produce group impacted K-pop

The rise of IZ*ONE started two and a half years ago when they debuted.

The 12 ladies would shatter records and from 2018 to early 2021 would be the second most popular group after TWICE. The group would shatter records for sales in the first week and have albums and Eps that would go platinum and double platinum.

IZ*ONE proved that collaboration between K-pop idols and J-pop AKB48 Group idols could not only work but would be wildly popular. The group would have a huge fanbase, called WIZ*ONEs, in Korea, Japan, and outside of Asia.

Unfortunately, the girls would be dragged into the Mnet voting manipulation, as it was shown the show’s producers rigged the show. This included IZ*ONE’s final lineup. Despite this controversy in the background, IZ*ONE not only succeeded but thrived.

When it was announced the group would disband after their two-and-a-half-year contract, fans raised about $3 million USD to save them. More radical fans tried to demand that the group to stay together at the CJ E&M offices. However, the group would follow through and disband in April 2021.

When IZ*ONE disbanded, it marked the end of the Produce era. Created from the incredibly popular music reality show, Produce 48, the group was instantly popular from their debut.

But rather than dwell on the negative news surrounding the group, let’s break down how the last Produce group became a huge hit in Korea. IZ*ONE impacted K-pop that only a few female groups could match.
