Why Do Women's Hips Sway When They Walk?

Women swing their hips when they walk because of some key differences in female anatomy. The pelvic bone in women is wider and shorter than in men. This is because the female pelvis contains main reproductive organs such as the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. During pregnancy, the uterus enlarges due to the growing fetus. The extra width is also required during childbirth so that the baby is able to exit through the birth canal.

As a result of the wider pelvis, there are differences in the structure of the hip joint such as greater acetabular anteversion and greater Q-angle.

In the video, I mention the major differences between male and female anatomy, but there are some smaller differences that I didn’t discuss. This includes differences in the ligaments that hold the hip joint in place, and differences in the muscular structure of the lower leg between men and women. Please note that the video exaggerates anatomical differences between men and women for illustration purposes. Also, the differences in anatomy are not exclusively restricted to men or women. They represent the average male and female skeleton. It is highly likely that there are some men with features that are associated with average female anatomy, and women with features associated with average male anatomy.
