WHAT ARE PARALYTICS AND HOW THEY WORK - Paralytics (Part 1) - ICU Drips

Описание к видео WHAT ARE PARALYTICS AND HOW THEY WORK - Paralytics (Part 1) - ICU Drips

In this lesson we begin our discussion talking about paralytics in the ICU setting as we talk about what are paralytics and how they work. These are potentially dangerous medications that we use and therefore vital to have a good understanding of.

We start off talking about what paralytics, also know as neuromuscular blockers, are, which are essentially a group of medications that prevent muscle contraction by blocking the neurotransmitter Ach. It is important to know that these medications do not provide any sedative or analgesic properties.

Next we talk about the various reason that we use paralytics in the ICU and the list is pretty extensive covering various short and long term indications including intubation and ARDS.

Finally we talk about how it is these neuromuscular blocking agents do their job by taking a look at the anatomy and physiology. We do a quick overview of a neuron and how the action potential travels along the axon, and then move to talk about what happens at the neuromuscular junction when the action potential reaches the end. It is at this spot where these medications are going to have the effect and block the Ach receptors.

Hopefully after this lesson you will have a good understanding of the basics of these medications and have a solid foundation on how they work as we move in to the future lessons.
