Electric-vehicle shoppers looking for a quirky but stylish ride can look to the 2019 Kia Soul EV—as long as they live in California or Oregon. The boxy hatchback offers 111 miles of driving range, standard fast charging, and enough style to earn you some attention from the neighborhood.

A 30-kWh battery powers the 2019 Soul EV to a tune of 109 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque. The hp figure means this car won’t be outracing anyone on the highway, but the 210 lb-ft will help it feel quick and spritely about town. Charging the Soul EV via a regular 120-volt outlet takes close to 33 hours, but a Level 2 charger drops that figure to 6, and a DC fast charger provides 80% charge in 30 minutes—and all Souls are available from the factory with the ability to charge at any of those speeds.

Cargo space measures 18.8 cubic feet, compared to 24.2 cubes in a gas-powered Soul. Dropping the rear seats doesn’t improve the EV’s standing much, either, as the available 49.5 cubic feet still pales next to the standard Soul’s 62.3 cubic feet of max cargo space.

Advanced safety systems like automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring aren’t available on the Soul EV. Infotainment, however, is handled by the great UVO system, which runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
