A highly anticipated debate on decriminalising gay sex while upholding the traditional family structure has kicked off in Parliament. Ministers K Shanmugam and Masagos Zulkifli said the time has come to repeal Section 377A. At the same time, there is strong consensus in society that the definition of marriage should only be between man and woman, with children raised by them. Over 20 MPs rose to speak -- many urging for compromise and balance in what are divisive issues. Meanwhile, the Workers' Party lifted the whip for its MPs to allow those not in favour of the repeal of 377A to "vote freely".
