The text was written by Judson W. Van DeVenter (1855–1939), while the music was composed by Winfield S. Weeden (1847–1908). The original version was intended for a duet to sing the verses and a choir or congregation to sing the refrain. Most modern hymnals use a four-part harmonization of the entire hymn for congregational singing. It was first published in Gospel Songs of Grace and Glory (1896).
