Welcome to Bowlers Paradise's review of the Roto Grip Magic Gem!

The all new attention star isn’t actually new to the Roto Grip brand as they’ve released 8 balls within this line internationally with this one being the first domestic release. On the inside is the Momentus Core with a low 2.48 RG, medium .049 differential and a higher .017 intermediate diff. On the outside is the etrax + pearl coverstock finished with their reactagloss finish. One item of note is that Roto Grip claims this to be the same cover blend as what was used on the fan favorite RST X-2.

For the layout I went with a 4.5x5x4 2LS Layout. I see a lot of overlap between this one and the 900 global, and with how much I loved that ball, I decided to go with a similar layout to that previous release. Its a good, balanced layout that gives me versatility to do different things with my hand positions to yield different shapes on the lane.

AND ON THE LANES…honestly, when I think of the ideal shiny asym motion, this is exactly the shape I have in mind. The attention star is one part RST X2, One part Eternity and one part Altered Reality. Each of my favorite parts from those three pieces is in this new one from Roto Grip.

But even though there’s those three great parts, my favorite thing about throwing this one is the balance of the them all. The altered reality had such a pronounced shape in the midlane and off the spot, and its in this one too. The Eternity is super continuous through the pins, and this one is too. And the RST X2 just blew through the front part of the lane, and this one does too. All that put together gives us a great angular, but reliable option for our arsenals.

On the list of downsides, this much power comes with great responsibility, and if you’re in the wrong part of the lane, you’ll learn real fast how irresponsible that is. This thing is strong as heck, and was pretty much unusable inside of 4th arrow for me. Now I know that will tame out over time just like any ball does, but this reaction out of the box is wild and if you don’t have a handle on it, you’re going to leave some creative designs in the pin deck.

To offset that, I think pairing this one with an Absolute Power and a 900 global Xponent would allow you to use the Attention Star when the time is right and not have to force it. The Xponent has become a really versatile piece for me and the Absolute Power is similar to the Attention star in overall strength, but it way smoother front to back. Its going to require a skilled hand to really master this arsenal, but when you do, the strikes will come in droves.

Moving to our crossbrand comparisons, I first took a look at the Crimson Jackal from MOtiv and I see a very similar shape, but its definitely rounder off the spot than the attention star. Even though these pieces occupy the same place in an arsenal, this shape is a little less risky, but also will carry a little less on the good hits.

Then I took a look at the Envy Tour Pearl from Hammer and it is clearly a different shape. Its weaker overall, yet smoother off the corner. It’s a much better option for when you need control, but when it comes time to open your angles us and watch it fly, the attention star has a massive advantage over this one.

But with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with this piece. The first is for the bowler looking for a super fun ball to throw. As we get into the dog days of league, adding the attention star to your arsenal will spark the fun up again. You might not score too well as you figure out how to tame this beast, but the number of boards you’ll cover will be so fun you won’t care.

The second is for bowlers with a lower rev rate. I see these bowlers loving the attention star as they’ll be able to cover some boards and not worry if the ball will hook or get through the pins. I would probably drill it with a larger VAL angle just to tame the backend off a bit, but either way, I see these bowlers loving this type of performance in their arsenal

The all new Attention Star from Roto Grip is certainly going to attract some eyes with its shape on the lane, but in the right hands, your scores will be gathering more attention than ever.
