With David Hyman, professional tour guide. Bethsaida is mentioned in the New Testament as the hometown of three of the Apostles: Petre and his brother Andrew, and the apostle Phillip. The name of the town in Hebrew means the hose ( Beth) of hunting ( Saida) and might refer to the fishing economy of the inhabitants of the region. For many years the site was not accessible as it was on the border between Israel and Syria, but after 1967 during a survey, the site was identified as Bethsaida when dwelling s and artic]facts from the 1st century were uncovered. Under the 1st century layer, the excavations revealed many walls, fortifications, and an enormous city gate, all dating back to the 10th century BCE. The scholars agree that the town could be identified as the Biblical town of Geshur, home town of Talmai King of Geshur and his daughter Maacha. Maacha is mentioned as one of King David's wives. Maacha and King David had a son Avshalom - who later rebelled against his father David. The site is within the Jordan River Park, which is a popular picnic and hiking site during the summer season. It is possible to choose one of the hiking trails in the park and advance as close as possible to the Jordan River, at the section just before it enters into the Sea of Galilee.
