A new endgame episode is coming up every Thursday! To continue the series, I have decided to cover the absolutely essential endgames every tournament player must know.

In this video I have gone over the Lucena position, the most basic winning technique in rook and pawn endgames.

It is for winning R&P endgames what Philidor is for drawing them, meaning that it will be the basis all other knowledge is build upon.

The Lucena position is a position in which one side has a king, rook and pawn, and the other king and rook. The attacking player’s king has reached the queening square, and his pawn is one square away, on the 7th/2nd rank.

The winning technique is quite simple, but you would hardly find it yourself during a real game if you don’t know it. It’s called building a bridge. The attacker uses a rook lift to be able to shield his king from perpetual checks and thus be able to queen his pawn.

I hope that after watching the video you will win these every time!

PS. Streams will continue every Thursday and Friday starting tomorrow (Feb 28th)!
New endgame episodes out every Thursday, new middlegame episodes every Friday!
