A new endgame episode is coming up every Thursday! To continue the series, I have decided to cover the absolutely essential endgames every tournament player must know.

The first up is the Philidor position, also known as the third rank defense, a crucial defensive technique used to draw rook and pawn endgames in which one side has a pawn, and the other plays with his rook and king alone.

Despite being quite simple and very easy to employ, the Philidor defensive technique is not that very well known! There have been games in which 2400+ rated players lost such positions!
