At Senate Estimates, Treasury confirmed the 1.2 million home target is now forecast to fall around a quarter of a million dwellings short. Officials say the target is “ambitious.” The numbers say it won’t be met.

Even as approvals tick up, the Reserve Bank is now projecting dwelling investment to slow sharply, turning negative over the medium term.

Big targets. Big spending. But weaker forecasts.

On the 5% deposit scheme, Treasury was also pressed on why parts of its modelling, including references to the supply response, were redacted under FOI. Officials insist the process was properly applied and is now under review.

The core question remains: if supply is the key to affordability, why are we still falling behind?

Targets are meant to focus effort. Results are what matter.
