Panic attacks can be extremely frightening, as they can come from out of the blue and can cause a person to think they that something terrible is happening (e.g., heart attack, dying, going crazy, lose control). This video explains a model for understanding what happens in a panic attack and the various physical sensations that a person can experience during a panic attack. These physical sensations in panic are perfectly normal and adaptive if faced with actual physical threat or danger. But in the absence of any clear threat or danger, these sensations can be extremely scary because the person interprets them with the “Uh-oh Reaction”. The key point to understand is that panic attacks are not caused by the physical sensations of panic, but by catastrophic misinterpretations of normal body sensations. Essentially, it’s not the physical sensations that cause a panic attack, but the way you interpret those physical sensations that cause panic attacks.
